Bad news about the Spy School movie — for now

Hey everyone –

I know you have been waiting a long time for an update about the Spy School movie — and I am sure this is not what you were hoping for.  It’s certainly not what I was hoping for.

After 54 weeks of doing nothing with the movie script, Disney decided that they were not going to move forward with the Spy School movie.

Why?  I don’t really have a great answer for that.  I was told that Disney had some concerns with the story involving kids in real danger — which you’d think they would have been able to figure out was part of the plot long ago, given the title.

Sadly, this kind of thing happens a lot in Hollywood.  As I keep saying, it is very hard to get a movie made.

This does not mean the movie will never get made.  My agents can now try to set the project up at another movie studio or streaming service.  We will see what happens.

In the meantime, feel free to write angry letters to Disney or cancel your Disney + accounts in protest.

  1. Hey Stuart. I have a lot of things to say, first of all I love your books- like a lot. Second my mom made it a punishment to take away my book (its awful) thats how much i like them. Thirdly can’t wait for spy school blackout to come out. And last but not least I really hope you can find someone who is willing to make spy school a movie (and im also gonna try if i can). P.S sorry for your loss

  2. Christiana –

Thanks for your kind words. (I hope you don’t have your books taken away too often.)

  3. I love the spy school books and love the plot twists and by the way my favorite character is Erica Hale I love her determination and I would love to hear the rest of her story. I hope the spy school movie does come out someday I love the idea of this and love movie with action.

  4. Hii just so you know Mr. Gibbs I LOOOVE your spy school series and would like to say a few things.
    1. THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING BEN & ERICA DATE THEY ARE THE CUTEST COUPLE
    2. I think it would be kinda cool if you made a short series focusing on when everyone is not on a mission?
    3. I’m obsessed with the series and you’re my favorite author, the spy school series is one of the only book series that I would reread over and over again!

  5. Stuart,

I am a fifth grader,I love your books, are Zoe and mike gonna get together?

  6. sean –

I never like to spoil anything that is going to happen in future books. It sounds to me like you may not have read the entire series yet.

  7. Zack –

I don’t think any author can pick a favorite between lead characters.

  8. Stuart,

Just curious about the update on the spy school movie, I haven’t heard anything about it besides some old posts.

  9. Apollo –

The reason I haven’t given any updates in the SS movie is because there is nothing to update. If anything happens, I will post about it.

  10. I have an idea, how about you post on your page and get everyone to overwhelm the internet with protests about the spy school movie, until diseney says yes, there are a lot of people that want it, and I’m pretty sure if we got like a thousand people all posting and emailing Disney, they would make it

  11. Spy school movie –

People tried doing exactly that around five years ago. It didn’t;t make a difference.

  12. Hello, Mr. Gibbs,

i just want to say that I really enjoy the SS series and hope you have better luck with the spy school movie

  13. Hello!
I love spy school, and I have two questions
1: How did you decide to add LGBTQ+? and why?
2: just curious, why don’t you allow suggestions? I understand it could be rude, like saying you don’t know how to do your job (which you are very good at btw!) but wouldn’t it also be fun to see people’s ideas? (if they’re any good lol)

  14. Mr. Gibbs,

First off I love your books they are some of my favorites and you are a really talented writer. I really hope you have better luck with your movie. Just wanted to say I always thought it would be cool if you made a book or series from Erica’s perspective. She’s such a good character and it would be really neat to not only see her backstory but also her perspective on some of the missions. Of course, this is just a suggestion so… yeah just an idea being thrown out there.

    Thanks!!

  15. why is kids in danger because of the movie?? You can use fake Weapons. Good luck with the movie, Mr.Gibbs

  16. Zippy –

    1) I added LGBTQ+ because LGBTQ+ people exist and since my books take place in the real world, sooner or later someone had to be LGBTQ+.

    2) People are free to suggest things to me. There is just virtually no chance that I am going to use them. I already have lots and lots of ideas and have thought farther ahead in my series than most people realize. So usually, they are making a suggestion that I can’t use. And even if I did like someone’s idea — it’s their idea, not mine, and using someone else’s idea, even if they say it’s ok, still seems wrong to me.

  17. SS Rules!

It is my belief that Erica is a much funnier character from Ben’s perspective than she would be from her own perspective.

  18. Secret_Spy_Agent

The issue is not that people would be in danger while filming the movie.

It’s that the idea of making a movie with kids in such grave danger is not what Disney wanted to do.

  19. Okay, that makes sense. Just a question I’ve been wondering: How did you come up with spy school?? Did the idea just plop into your head or were you trying to come up with fun book plots? Sorry if that seems like a weird question, I’ve just always wondered how authors come up with such creative and good storylines.

Thanks and have a great day!

  20. SS Rules!

Please see my FAQ page on this site for details on where all the inspiration came from.

  21. I love the spy school series my teacher got it for our class I’ve red them all there so GOOD Stuart Gibbs is the best other i’ve been waiting for the movie to come out and will diffnetly tell my friends
    MAKE SPY SCHOOL A MOVIE
Erika hale is by far my favorite character and I would love to play ben or Mike berenski I love spy school and Erika hale

  22. Stuart, Spy School is so good I’m starting to think I need to be recruited. I’ve learned more about espionage from Ben Ripley than my history class ever taught me. Also, how has Hollywood not made a Charlie Thorne movie yet?? She’s 13, smarter than Einstein, and casually outruns secret agents like it’s P.E. class. Give this girl a Netflix deal already — I’d binge that faster than Ben dodging ninjas in Algebra!

  23. hey mr gibbs
i was wondering when books get translated to another language how does the process work? english isn’t my first language and in my native language only the first two books have been translated, and i would love to real the rest of them

    thank you for your time!

  24. Mina –

Getting books translated is kind of a complicated process. Generally, publishers in various countries purchase the rights and then pay someone to translate the books for that country. So, to get the books translated into Chinese, a Chinese publisher would buy the rights and then arrange for the translations to happen. Because there are so many countries and so many languages, that’s a lot of deals to put together, and different countries end up contracting for different numbers of books. How many get translated often has to do with how the books do in that country. (For example, Spy School does extremely well in Poland, and they are racing to translate all the books as quickly as possible. But in other countries, they might only translate the first two books in the series, whereas in others, there hasn’t been a translation at all.) Honestly, it’s impossible to keep track of which books of mine have sold to which countries.

So if only the first two books in a series have been translated in your country, it’s worth finding out who the publisher is (who would be listed in the book itself) and checking their website to see if more books are coming.

  25. Can you write a book taking place on the Matterhorn, like the one in Disneyland or the real one in Switzerland because I went to the fake one in Disneyland on a field trip from school and boy it was so cool even though I didn’t get on the ride!

  26. AD –

It is very difficult for me to take suggestions from readers. I can only write locations in when they fit the story that I am working on. A scene at the real Matterhorn would be extremely different from the Disneyland one. I have set plenty of scenes on mountains already, although not the specific Matterhorn.

  27. hi mr Gibbs
I love your books and I have a question if you did make something would you make just a single movie and maybe sequel to that movie or a show or TV series?

  28. SpySchool

I am open to any format for how to make Spy School. That decision is really up to the studios.

  29. Dear Mr Gibbs

I have two questions: Will Spy School Blackout intrduce a new character and when the time is right make a Spy School After Graduation?

  30. Nils –

Every book generally introduces at least one new character.

I can’t promise anything about what future SS books will be about.

  31. when do you think a movie company will come to you and say they will make the movie?

  32. Mr Gibbs

Just wanted to let you know we will be coming for you soon

    Your pals at SPYDER

  33. your pals at SPYDER

If I knew when a movie company would want to make a SS movie, then I would have magical powers. I do not have magical powers, so I have no idea when or if this will ever happen.

  34. Dear Mr.Gibbs do you have any ideas for the next Charlie thorne book and if you
have any ideas what’s the name of the book

  35. Ripley –

I do have ideas for the next CT book but I do not know if I have time to write it. I never give a book a title until I have finished writing it.

  36. can you add a scene when ben is captured and is refusing to give any information so the enemy that captured him smears slime on his face and when erica arrives she sees ben is covered in slime.

  37. unknown –

Sorry, but I can’t take suggestions from readers, especially ones that are so specific.

  38. can you make more spy school graphic novels? I like seeing the characters in action

  39. Emitrius

I AM making more SS graphic novels. The entire series is being turned into GNs. However, the fastest that Anjan can illustrate them is one per year.

  40. I love your books they are really great and I do hope that you come out with a movie

  41. I hope a movie comes out soon I love the books but my favorite is evil spy school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Dear Mr.Gibbs
I would just like to say that your books are very well written and are so good, just a quick question though. How many books will you make overall? (Not that I want you to stop). 🙂

  43. Amazed –

I really have no idea how many books I will make overall. I have no idea how long I will live and I would like to keep writing for a good portion of that time.
