where did you get inspiration for “spy school project x” i loved the book but am still wondering where you got the idea

  2. Francis –

I don’t have a favorite of any series that I have written. I work very hard on every book that I write and like them all equally well.

If any of my books gets turned into a movie, I will post about it on this very blog. And if there are open casting calls, I will post about those here as well.

  4. Xx

I explain where the idea for Project X came from in the book itself, in the author’s note at the end.

  5. Dear Mr. Gibbs,
I am a huge fan of dc, especially Batman, and I recently realized that you helped make a Batman graphic novel, and the second is coming out soon. Thus, I have a few questions.

    1. Why is Hugo strange a vice principal? In the comics, he is usually either your average mad scientist, or an insane psychiatrist obsessed with perfection. Why did you make him the vice principal?
    2. What would you say is the difference between writing a graphic novel and a normal book? Since you worked with an artist, did you have equally split creative control? Or did one of you have more control than the other?
    3. Where do you draw inspiration for the characters and how they act? Do you use any specific comics or movies for how characters act? Or do you make most stuff up?
    4. Out of all the Batman movies, which would you say are your favorites? (My personal favorite is the Batman (2022))
    5. I know you most likely can’t answer this, but if there are more books in this series, do you have any planes on using lesser known villains such as calendar man, the ventriloquist/scarface, and the mad hatter?

Thank you, and only answer the questions you want to answer. I’m a big fan!

  6. Froujy –

    1) DC actually suggested the vice principal. I had originally written a different character there.

    2) A GN is much more like a screenplay than a book. You have to think of how to tell the story visually. For DC, I have to describe what is happening in every single panel.

    3) To their credit, DC let me do whatever i wanted with the characters. I didn’t base them on any specific movies or comics. I just imagined what someone with superpowers might be like in middle school — and what someone who didn’t have superpowers might be like in those circumstances.

    4) I really am not a fan of the really dark Batman movies. Amd I don’t like how campy the movies got in the 1980s. So I’d have to say that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is the best.

    5) Berat is slipping lots of the lesser known villains into the background, but to me, for most of the humor to work, I need to write about characters who are familiar to my young audience. (That said, I can occasionally make an appearance by a lesser known character funny.)

  7. Hi Mr. Gibbs!
I love Spy School and I’m sure this is all classified lol, but two questions:
    1) do you forsee a end to the spy school series anytime soon, or do you think it might just keep going for years to come?
    2) would there ever be a potential spin-off where the stories of Alex+Catherine Hale, or Cyrus and Mary Hale are told?
    thanks!

I do not see an end to the SS series in the next few years. Can’t say how long it will go.

There is a very slight chance that there could be some sort of prequels to the series, but for now I prefer the idea of telling more stories about the current characters.

  9. My school JUST got Spy camp graphic novel and Spy ski school. I am so exited! ;-;

  10. Why did you go to the CIA headquarters? Also why is there a equation when sending a blog post?

  11. Jonathan

I went to CIA headquarters because I was invited by the CIA. Who would turn that down?

There is an equation for posting on my blog to keep people from using computers to spam my comments.

  12. Hello Mr. Gibbs. I love you spy school series you cant stop reading them (right now im at SSBG). My question is if you would want to join a discord server vith 500+ people thats dedicated to you called “Stuart central” where people can discuss about your books?

    Best regards,

    Agent Vader

  13. Agent Vader –

Sorry but I barely have time to respond to all these comments and really can’t be active on the Discord.

  14. Mr. Gibbs

I know you normally don’t have favorites with your books, but which book or series do you think has the best plot and which do you enjoy writing the most?

  15. mini –

Those are all impossible questions to answer. I work very hard on plotting, so I can;t say that one book’s plot is better than another’s in the same way that I can;t say that one book is better than another. And I enjoy writing all of them equally. If I did not, then I wouldn’t;t write them all.

  16. Me

There are thousands of places on earth. There could be an SS book in any one of them.

  17. Happy April fools!
    Dear Mr. Gibbs,
    Do authors celebrate April fools?
Or are you too busy to?

    (P.S.If you do celebrate
Can you share a prank you once did?)

  18. I noticed that the release dates for Ape Escape and that boxed set are still there in the upcoming releases section.

  19. pavin sathish –

Please read the post on this blog about SS 14. Or look at the upcoming releases box on every page of this website.

  20. Hi Stuart.

So I know you said you have no interest in doing a crossover, but do all the books take place in the same universe, or do they take place in different universes?

  21. Axl –

I would say that most of my series do not take place in the same universe as the others.

  22. Hi Mr. Gibbs!

I need your help settling a debate:

In Evil Spy School, one character tells Ben that another character thinks SPYDER’s scheme involves mineral rights & Indonesia (to show that they don’t really know anyhting about the scheme at that point in the book).

Was that intentional forshadowing for Spy School Goes Wild + Spy School Blackout or just a coincidence?

    Thanks!
    Lillie

  23. Lillie –

That might be an example of some very forward thinking on my part.
