I have received a lot of messages from a lot of people wanting to know about this book. So I will not draw things out any longer. Here is the new cover and title:
And here is the synopsis:
When the seasoned adult spies of the Hale family mysteriously disappear on a mission to China, Ben Ripley and his fellow spies-in-training head east to discover what happened to them—and find themselves up against a villainous plot that will take them from the skyscrapers of Shanghai to the ancient ruins of the Great Wall to the remote regions of the Gobi desert.
It will be available on October 6. Click here to pre-order it! (Although a lot of sites may not have it ready for pre-order yet. They will soon, though.)
Now, here are the answers to a few questions I am sure I will get:
That’s it? That’s all the information you are going to share with us?
Yes. The less you know about a book before you read it, the more fun it is the read. I don’t want to spoil anything.
Can’t you tell me anything else? Even if I ask nicely?
Sorry, no. And if you send me an email or post a comment asking for more info, I will simply direct you back to this page.
Will there be an exclusive edition of this book with bonus content?
Probably, although that isn’t guaranteed yet. If there is, I will post about it.
Now that you have written Goes South, Goes North and Goes east, will there be a Spy School Goes West?
I don’t know. Strange as it might seem, I write the titles of my books last, not first. I wrote this book because I wanted to set a book in China, not because I wanted to call a book ‘Spy School Goes East.’ That title just ended up working better than any of the other options.

I like your books alot. But I was wondering, are Dash and Violets personalities the same as the way they are potrayed in Space Case
AV
Violet’s personality as a young child was similar to her personality in the book.
Mr. Gibbs,
I’m genuinely so excited for this book to come out. But one question, do you ever plan on writing a book set in Korea? I’m a half Korean and it’d be so cool to see my culture incorporated into one of your books.
Thanks, Noah
Noah –
I could certainly write a book in Korea some day. I can’t guarantee that though.
Nice cover! Also I have a question will this books villain be a new or old villain?
cool i’ve been waiting for this
How many SS books do you think you are going to write? Do you think you will run out of animals at FJ? Can there be another SS book in Africa?
Freddy Fazbear –
As noted in this post, I cannot answer any more questions about the plot.
BEARCAT –
I do not know how many SS books there will be.
There are thousands of large animals on earth (and hundreds of millions of smaller ones). I am not going to run out of animals to write about.
If I set another SS book in Africa, it would be in a very different part of that continent. If you would like to read another book of mine set in Africa, Ape Escape will be out in only a few weeks.
How many books of SS will there be? Let’s hope there’s a lot more to come! how do I get tickets to your meet and greet in Manhattan on April 9th? Also will there be a SS book in NY because that seems great! NY is a great place to write a book! I am on SPY SCHOOL GOES SOUTH so if the blackout is in NY don’t blame me. I am so exited for the spy school graphic novels coming up!!! I would love to Know about somethings that inspired this career. – Stella (age 9) started reading at 8
Please tell me that there will be another sis book ? after this one please ?.
Also I do not like that u left us hanging in spy school blackout!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stella K
I do not know how many SS books there will be.
The event in NYC ought to have tickets available soon. You can get them on the Books of Wonder website which I have a link to under the event posting.
If you read my FAQ there are answers to your questions about inspriation for my book series.
Agent Taco –
There will be another SS book after this one.
Sorry, I try to keep some of my information about my children pricate.
I love the series, and just wondering, but in the future, would you do a timeskip in the book? to maek things interesting and mature the characters in a way if you ever want to start a new continuation series?
Shubhum
Since the series is a middle grade series, making a large time skip to an older age would shift the series to young adult. I do not want to leave my younger readers behind so I do not have plans to age up the series any time soon.
Hi Mr Stuart Gibbs,
Obviously you already know my name and are probably well aware that I have talked to you. This is something that I am so excited to read because I am ranked highest in my class thanks to your books they taught big vocabulary words and are very interesting to read with amazing plots. I go on a road trip to Brawely CA near Oct 4-18 so I will be reading this in the car instead of being an IPad/IPhone kid ( which frankly, is quite annoying knowing that my generation is like that ) Anyway thank so much .
-Zyrah
Hi AV again but what would SSGE be as an ice cream flavor
AV
Red bean ice cream, I guess?
Zyrah –
Glad to hear you’ll be reading on your road trip!
Hello Mr. Gibbs,
I’m sure you’ve heard this too many times, but I love your books. I had a question about the writing of the Spy School series, and this might be answered in Goes East, but: I notice how Spy School doesn’t really talk about the US South in your books. I’m from the South, and when people mostly talk about us they talk about Texas or Florida(like in Project X). Do any of the characters have a backstory here? (i.e. Cyrus once was on an airboat and chased an enemy agent through the Atchafalaya, or Erica was part of a training exercise to help take down a warehouse full of stolen goods in New Orleans) I know that you can’t guarantee anything in future books, but even if you just put a few words about the South, it would mean a lot to me and other readers down south.
Thanks, Agent Robertson
Agent Robertson –
Part of the reason that I have avoided the south in my Spy School series is that I have another series that takes place there: The FunJungle series primarily takes place in the Texas Hill Country, where I grew up. So if you’re looking for a series where the South plays a big part, I would recommend that one!
Will the the spy school series ever get back to the United States? And will Chip and Jawa be in the book?
Charles Dougherty –
Please read this post again to clarify my position on answering any more questions.
Did you already have the cover before the release and just dint’t give it out
Hello Stuart Gibbs, I love your book series and am very thankful that you told us what Spy School 14 will be about. Everybody in my grade loves all your different books and I am here to thank you for writing amazing books and always responding to my messages when I post them in Goodreads. Second I have three questions 1: Were any of the computer programming words true in spy school blackout or are they all false 2: Are you planning on making another series and 3: What is your favorite book, series, and your personal series? Thank you again for making wonderful books and responding to all the questions!!! ???
Ben Hale –
Lots of things need to be worked out before the cover can be released. I am not the only person involved. And covers go through many drafts before we are set on it.
It’s not like I get the cover and then think ‘I’m going to just keep this secret for weeks while all my readers want to see it. MWAH-HA-HA-HA.’
Anton –
1) Most of the computer programming words in Blackout are real words used completely incorrectly, although there is probably some gibberish in there too.
2) News about another series is classified.
3) I have lots of favorite books (like The Westing Game) and favorite series (like Encyclopedia Brown). But I do not have a favorite series of my own.
Agent Robertson
Omg hey twin I’m from New Orleans!! I feel you, I’d love to see some Spy School stuff there. I got so excited when our food was mentioned in the bonus content of Spy School Revolution lol
l am Korean (l don’t know English well).
l’ve been enjoying reading your Spy School
series, which I’ve purchased. I have questions. How long do you plan to continue this series?
And when the series ends, how old will the main characters in the novel be?
Da in Anh –
Hello! It is exciting to hear from a fan in Korea!
I do not know how many books there will be in the SS series, so I cannot really say how old the characters will be when it ends.
PLEASE I NEED A NEW CHARLIE THORNE BOOK! BOOK FOUR WAS SOOOOOO GOOD!
Do you do book signing or smth cause my Blackout copy is ready!
Hello Mr. Gibbs. I just want to say that your books have been really captivating and amazing. All the adventures that the SS gang goes on is very inspiring. I can’t wait to see SS 14 come out. Thanks for all of these amazing books
Erica Thorne –
Please see the Signed Books page of this website.
Max –
Thanks for the kind words.
How do you write so much books each year and write for tv and film?
Happy –
I am very organized.
Hello Mr. Gibbs. I come from South Korea and I just have to say that your books are amazing!! The tension, the plot, the witty banter, the perfect amount of romance!!! I love everything about every one of your books. Please keep up the good work and never never give up! ????
As much as I love each new book in this series and will continue to keep reading them, I’m curious if you ever have any plans of writing for an older audience? I’ve been reading your books for quite a long time now, and each time I revisit this series, I manage to find brilliance in your writing—even if it’s intended for younger readers. However, I am often left wondering if you’d ever consider a new story or have any plans on expanding your writing to an audience that is older? Is that something that interests you in any way? I’d love to know your thoughts, Mr. Gibbs.
Stuart gibbs will there be a new charlie thorne book? I really loved the last one and I really want another one.
Quinn –
I have given a little thought to writing for older readers, but for now, I enjoy writing for middle grade too much to stop doing it.
South Korean –
Thanks for your kind words!
Erica Thorne –
I am not sure if there will be another CT books. I have ideas, but not the time. (It takes me about three times longer to write a CT than any other book due to all the research & code-development & plotting.)
Mr. Gibbs-
Do you have any plans for a new series? Also I would love if any new funjungle books took place back at funjungle instead of other places
Mr Gibbs-
I love your books and my whole family has been reading them since we were little. Thank you for bringing joy to my family. Also, try listening to Taylor Swifts new album, cause its really good. Keep making amazing books!
PS: Spy school Blackout if my favourite
TAYLORSWIFTISBETTERTHANU
If I have news about a new series, I will post it here. So stay tuned to this website.
As for FJ, Ape Escape makes a return to FunJungle (at least for part of the book).
Re: Spy School Southern Presence
Thanks, Mr. Gibbs. Am already on Whale Done since you posted. Also, which CIA agent, I mean, “character” do you relate the most to? Agent Ripley? Agent Hale (Alexander)?
Hi Mr Gibbs thank you for all the information for SS go’s East and I know that you don’t know how many books of SS there are going to be but do you think that you would create a SS book of MI6 and would you ever combine Fun Jungle and SS to make a book like that. Thank you so much I really appreciate it.
Agent Robertson –
Ben is probably the closest character to me in the series. The way he reacts to things is generally the way I would probably react to them.
