Bad news about the Spy School movie — for now

Hey everyone –

I know you have been waiting a long time for an update about the Spy School movie — and I am sure this is not what you were hoping for.  It’s certainly not what I was hoping for.

After 54 weeks of doing nothing with the movie script, Disney decided that they were not going to move forward with the Spy School movie.

Why?  I don’t really have a great answer for that.  I was told that Disney had some concerns with the story involving kids in real danger — which you’d think they would have been able to figure out was part of the plot long ago, given the title.

Sadly, this kind of thing happens a lot in Hollywood.  As I keep saying, it is very hard to get a movie made.

This does not mean the movie will never get made.  My agents can now try to set the project up at another movie studio or streaming service.  We will see what happens.

In the meantime, feel free to write angry letters to Disney or cancel your Disney + accounts in protest.

  5. oops… the black classified font didn’t work. it came out as a bunch of zeros. (you know, the font stu uses in the spy school letters when something’s classified?)

In earlier comments, a Mike Brezenski said he had two accounts on this blog: Mike Brezenski, and Nathan Hale. Maybe there’s to Mike B’s?

  11. My copy of CT2 is yet to arrive, but I hope it’ll arrive soon! btw i’m traveling so it may take me a LONG Time to reply to comments and posts.

  12. I got CT2 last night, though I’m still reading it. It’s really good.

  13. THERE WAS A FRICKIN LAUNCH! pardon my expression BUT S2RIOUSLY I MISSED IT AWWW COME ON!

  14. well, stu answered questions and told us about his book. no spoilers though. you didn’t miss much.

  15. You can still watch it, it was a FaceBook Live, but the link is on the previous post. You won’t be watching it live, and won’t get to ask Mr. Gibbs questions and see his answer them on FaceBook, but it’s still fun to watch (I watched it live, though).

  16. Ben Ripley-

Woah someone with a profile picture on the blog. Something you dont see often

  17. Hi Stuart, how would you like the spy school film to feel tonally? What sort of age range would you like to target with it? Would it be like Harry Potter where assuming more films are made they’ll progressively get more serious, or do you want to go for a more comical feel?

  18. Blake –

Ideally, the SS films would feel just like the books and appeal to a wide range of people. The HP movies got more serious because the books got more serious. I am not doing that with the SS books.

  19. Make it an animated series!! This way, you don’t have to worry about characters aging out, or finding younger characters to play the roles.

  20. Oh, I’ll DEFINITELY write angry letters to Disney. Anything to get the SS movie!

  21. That’s super dumb of all the bad movies of kids in danger this is the one they say is “too much” I hope Disney changes its mind. Stuart Gibbs is the best

  22. stu and peeps
disney might come back to the project and make in into thier new mandelorian or something after they milked star wars.

  23. -Stu
i saw somebody post this, but i agree. Aprroach netflix because they need a new TV8 franchise. Also, i know that I am late, but to the people that care, Some guy by the name of Ricardo Hurtado popped up when I was surfing Netflix’ actor page. ngl, he looks like I imagined Ben would

  24. I will never watch a disney movie again I will aslo cancel my disney plus I barley even use it anyways I have netflix. You the best Mr.gibbs

    Rafael

  25. I would approach Netflix cautiously because its really easy to screw up a movie and stain the books reputation.

  26. Hi, Stu!

You got the idea for spy school when you were a kid right? Well, did you originally have the same plot you have today? Did you have a different plot but changed it to get it published? Was SPYDER always the main antagonist? How long did it take to get it published? Was your plan originally to make SS a published book series?

    thanks!!

  27. Free Real Estate –

While i had the idea for SS when I was a kid, everything about it changed radically by the time it got published. First of all, it was just a short story to begin with. No very different plot, no SPYDER, and I did not have any idea if the first book would do well enough to merit it being a series, so it was planned as a single book (with hopes that it could be a series some day.)

  28. Man I was looking forward to the Spy School movie! Disney has done so many dangerous movies I think they can just do another one! it would get them a lot of money from fans like me who loved the series!

  29. Luke-

I originally wanted to send it to Paramount, but I couldn’t find their email address, so I can’t do it. But if you find out what their email address is, tell me, and I will definitely include it.

  30. me want movieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  31. if a movie gets released I will want to watch it the second it gets out spyyyyyy schoooool!

  32. to bad disney wont let you make the movie i just finished ss today and i was really great. keep up the good work.

  33. I SERIOUSLY CAN’T BELIEVE IT! This totally sucks! I can’t believe that DISNEY, the last (okay, second-last) place on EARTH that I would expect not to make a movie, is cancelling this! I am going to ditch Disney+ and go with Netflix.
PS: If you are curious, Netflix is the last place on earth that I would expect not to make a movie.
