Bad news about the Spy School movie — for now

Hey everyone –

I know you have been waiting a long time for an update about the Spy School movie — and I am sure this is not what you were hoping for.  It’s certainly not what I was hoping for.

After 54 weeks of doing nothing with the movie script, Disney decided that they were not going to move forward with the Spy School movie.

Why?  I don’t really have a great answer for that.  I was told that Disney had some concerns with the story involving kids in real danger — which you’d think they would have been able to figure out was part of the plot long ago, given the title.

Sadly, this kind of thing happens a lot in Hollywood.  As I keep saying, it is very hard to get a movie made.

This does not mean the movie will never get made.  My agents can now try to set the project up at another movie studio or streaming service.  We will see what happens.

In the meantime, feel free to write angry letters to Disney or cancel your Disney + accounts in protest.

  1. NOOO!! ?????? I can’t believe it! I have been reading spy school and funjingle novels since the 3rd grade. I am now 13 years old, and still, every time I get a notification that you are publishing a new book, I (ask my little brother, it’s true) run around the house, screaming in joy. Disney clearly has not thought this through. Mabye we should remind them about their movie “ Mulan” Or perhaps, their spy kids series. Please, keep trying!

  2. I can’t believe they would do this! The first time I read Spy School, I had no idea what it would turn into today. It is now my favorite series, and this may sound weird, but every once in a while I will pretend I am one of the characters. It is my absolute DREAM to see a Spy School movie, or if it doesn’t happen in my childhood, grow up and make one. I actually wrote a list of all the books, and labeled them with SONGS TO PLAY AT THE END CREDITS! I am Spy School’s biggest fan, I can’t believe that Disney would do this, and I am 100% taking your advice and writing an angry letter.

  3. Could you write the script for 13+ or more so Disney will make it?(I mean if it’s rated for teenagers instead of children then Disney wouldn’t have a problem I think)

  4. Surena –

Disney controls the ratings, not me. If they had wanted to make a 13+ version of Spy School, they could have done it.

  5. That’s totally not fair! They made a bunch of movies with kids in danger! Like spy kids! It’s basically the same idea as spy school but worse!

  6. Are you serious??? Me and my friend Zarah have been dying for this!! How could Disney do this?? Do they know have many fans there are for spy school? This is ridiculous! And James Bond is right! I mean . . . seriously! This is soooooooooo unfair!!!!

  7. Same thing as Spy school fantic! It’s a great series, why can’t Disney see that?

  8. Maybe if you tried again to get them to make a movie, they would? At least a TV series or something!! I’m dying to see a movie or show!!!

  9. Jordan –

Disney as made it very clear they are not going to make this. It’s not like they’re going to change their minds if I ask nicely.

  10. I love the spy school series, it inspired me to write my book. I can’t believe Disney would do this. Disney’s making the Percy Jackson series, and he’s twelve in the first book. Unfair.

  11. Grrrrrr! I am so disappointed. I am also eagerly waiting for the spy school project X to come out. Can’t wait

  12. Really! I love spy school its the best book out there they better change the plans

  13. Dang, that sucks! I only just decided to check this website again and to see this is disappointing. Although, I’m certain somebody will accept the script, you being an amazing author and all. You inspired me to write my own book, although it’s not the greatest. Thanks for your books, good luck about the movie.

  14. Disney: *won’t make spy school cause it puts kids in danger

Also Disney a month before: *wandavision

  15. I’ve started reading spy school 5 days ago and I’ve read to At Sea. It’s just so fun. Im going to sue Disney! >: (

  16. I’m gonna explode from anger!!!! WHY!??? If Disney makes this, you and they will be rich! Just like Harry Potter. Just think about it, even though most of the people don’t read books, Spy School has THIS much fans! Just imagine how many fans would it have if it was a film or animation! ?

  17. Mr. Gibbs

    You are sooooooo smart!
    I’m saying this because:
    1. Your books and stories are totally different and fun
    2. Is Spy School series, you plan SPYDER’s plan, and Ben’s plan to defeat them. Both of them are super intelligent.
Spy School is my favorite book and I’ve read each book like, 10 times!
    Thank you?
If they’d make a film or animation of it, it’d be… Just WOW…

  18. Well, that’s just plain infuriating.

Why is Disney pretending like they have a reputation to keep in check as if they didn’t already have shows and cartoons that have kids in great danger (a la Gravity Falls)

  19. Well, that sucks. I wanted to get into acting and I figured that after reading these books, I wanted to start here, but I am starting to get too old to play the roles, and pretty soon I will not be able to.

  20. I started reading Spy school 5 days ago, and am already on Ski Spy School! Why would Disney reject such a great series!

  21. WHAT?! I’m gonna go use my frying pan to knock out those swamp-heads! I cannot survive without a Spy School movie! I really need to see what the characters look like! Please don’t make Erica ugly.

  22. I was a bit late commenting on this but I just saw it. Maybe Disney will do a Charlie Thorne movie! Though I’m definitely gonna unsubscribe to Disney+ because I’m a big fan of spy school too and moon base alpha!!!

  23. maybe paramount could make the movie. I trust them to make the movie more the Warner brothers, Disney, or even universal.

  24. Hopefully another platform can adopt the script. I really want to see what the characters look like and it would give me an amazing new perspective. I’m disappointed in Disney, but maybe you could try convincing other companies. This movie would be amazing.

  25. Why would Disney do such a thing? Spy School is like the best book ever. They aren’t doing anybody a favor about not making a movie. I’ve read all the Spy School books and can’t wait for the next one. I know some good studio out there will make a Spy School movie.

  26. why don’t you ask Disney to animate it? They have done animations before, maybe they’ll do it as an animation

  27. dear Gibbs,

I think you should suggest animation to Disney or maybe publish it yourself like Goerge Lucas did. He founded the ENTIRE star wars series which is so popular they have over 100 star wars fan clubs. I think you can do the same.

    your #1 fan, Talking ben

you can reply to me at

  28. Why would Disney do such a thing? I mean they made movies with kids in danger. What about a spy kids? I know some good movies studio will make a Spy School movie. Disney isn’t doing anybody a favor by not making a Spy School movie.

  29. Stuart Gibbs-
Try asking every movie production studio there is to make a Spy School movie. Try listing reasons why they should make a Spy School movie. Maybe those studios will decide to make one.

  30. Talking Ben –

Disney said No. That means No. I can’t convince them to make it.

  31. Talking Ben

George Lucas did not start Star Wars on his own. Fox studios funded it. Barely anyone could pay for a movie series on their own. (I certainly can’t.)

  32. What do you think the chance of a Spy School movie is? If any movie production company decides to make one, do you think they will make a movie for each book in the series?

  33. nerdboy83

I honestly have no idea what the chance of an SS movie is.

Therefore, I can’t really say whether or not each book will be made into a movie. That’s up to the studio.

  34. Honestly, try small companies instead. Or just hire a movie dude. They will help get actors. If you cannot fund it than create a donation thing and we will support.

  35. BUSSSSbus –

Getting a movie made is not quite as easy as you seem to think it is. There are not ‘movie dudes’ who you an hire to magically make movies happen.

  36. UNBELIEVABLE, just read this, so unfair, I love this series and am also a huge fan of percy jackson which (a) is probably more violent, I mean it has swords, death, and monsters, which (b) is putting kids in danger as Percy and EVERYONE ELSE is 12, not just him like in spy school. (Sidenote: percy is also the main character and the main FIGHTER unlike ben) Maybe dreamworks, pixar, paramount, or warner bros?

  37. Spy

I have been to EVERY MAJOR STUDIO with this project. Right now, I have no takers.
