Bad news about the Spy School movie — for now

Hey everyone –

I know you have been waiting a long time for an update about the Spy School movie — and I am sure this is not what you were hoping for.  It’s certainly not what I was hoping for.

After 54 weeks of doing nothing with the movie script, Disney decided that they were not going to move forward with the Spy School movie.

Why?  I don’t really have a great answer for that.  I was told that Disney had some concerns with the story involving kids in real danger — which you’d think they would have been able to figure out was part of the plot long ago, given the title.

Sadly, this kind of thing happens a lot in Hollywood.  As I keep saying, it is very hard to get a movie made.

This does not mean the movie will never get made.  My agents can now try to set the project up at another movie studio or streaming service.  We will see what happens.

In the meantime, feel free to write angry letters to Disney or cancel your Disney + accounts in protest.

    1) The TikTok thing was just an example, my point was that people might think the violence was cool and get themselves hurt.

    2) I don’t really get what you mean about the Marvel thing. About 99% of the entire series of movie involves adults. The adults do the stunts and taking down people. If kids (And this is just a theory) saw other kids their age doing stunts and taking down people, they might become more violent. This obviously is not 100% sure going to happen but Disney might feel that this is took much a risk.

The only kid in MARVEL is really Tom Holland, and he’s much older than us.

  3. But guys on the point of violence maybe Stu could go to Netflix ,though the only show I know of with teens/kids with violence on it is Cobra Kai.just saying.

  4. Hello, Mr. Gibbs.

I am a huge fan of your books and I just wanted to say thank you.

  5. Agent Erica Hale-

Yeah…Netflix seems to have no boundaries when it comes to kids. Frickin creeps over there. Netflix has recently gone downhill with the amount of users joining per year. So I don’t know if they’d have the funding to make a SS movie seeing as most of their money is going to keeping up their “Netflix originals”.

  6. Stu-
Just want to say that the spy school, fun jungle, and moon base alpha are the most read books in my library.
    Keep them coming!

  7. -Stu

If Disney has worries about putting kids in danger, what is the movie was animated? Would that be a Plan B?

P.S. I LOVE all of your books, I even have a booklist of all of the new books coming out. Thank you for creating these awesome, entertaining books for everyone to read! 🙂

  8. $1 Fan –

Animating a movie os no easy feat and it is harder to sell an animated feature than a non-animated one. It is an entirely different division of Disney.

  9. How different would you think the story would be if Trixie and Erica were twins?

  10. I read the main 5 Spy School books, all of which had very intense sequences and action. I’m truly annoyed that Disney didn’t take the chance to make the Spy School movie. I understand their argument from their end, but they should think. In the Spy School series, he doesn’t go through much pain at all. I noticed that he goes through way more action and intensity, but doesn’t go through any serious pain. I hope that another studio will take the privilege to make this movie. I LOVE IT

  11. How could they do this?!! The Spy School series is so good, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t make a movie with it. Spy School is my favorite series, so I hope that another company like Netflix or something agrees and makes it.

  12. Whats even worse about it is that Disney has made other movies that have kids in danger, so they don’t make any sense. Why would they do something like this? The fact that they declined it was bad enough, but the reason they said was the dumbest reason to exist. If they think “The kids are in real danger” then thye should remove every movie with kids in danger. They should make a decision to rather remove all the kid in danger movies or accept yours.

  13. Stu,

Can you please make the spy school books a bit faster plz?

    I am addicted to them.

  14. Stu,
If they were going to make a spy school movie (AND I 100 PERCENT WISH THEY DO a sometime in the future) who did you have ideas of casting for the characters? Like what would they look like? I’m just curious to know how you picture the characters

  15. Aww man, I’m such a big fan and it would be awesome if it could be made a movie. Maybe try Netflix I just know the movie would be a big hit. And like other people said, why don’t they just get rid of every danger movie that exists if they can’t make spy school cause I bet there are plenty more ‘dangerous’ movies then spy school. I mean can’t someone use a fake gun?

  16. Lia –

I have given zero thought to casting. It doesn’t matter what i think at all. (I explain why in my other blog post about the movie.)

  17. Riley 0

Yes, they would use fake guns to film the movie. They never use real guns in a movie.

The issue is not that filming would endanger kids. It’s that they don’t want to make movies where appear to be in danger.

That said, I am trying to sell it to Netflix. (Or anyone else who wants it.)

  18. Hi Stu I’m just wondering if you were to make a spy school movie what would it be rated?

  19. Gabe –

The idea would be to have SS be rated PG or PG13 so that my readers could see it.

  20. Hi Stu
I am sooo frustrated that they said no.?? I love your books.
Maybe you could ask Netflix to do it ?
It is awesome that you are a environmentalist and in the book spy school goes south the end note gave me courage to speak up so i was hoping to make a speech using some parts of the book.

  21. Disney is more evil than SPYDER and the croation!
    but keep tring please.

  22. tj –

I am taking SS to every remaining studio in Hollywood, including Netflix.

I am glad you have been inspired to acivism on behalf of the environment. Feel free to quote my book.

  23. Stu, I am a very huge marvel fanboy so I know that their Marvel movies show kids hurt, and even about to be shot down. I am a new reader of your books, (as in I only started reading SS or other books of yours after you posted this comment), but I am Binge reading them ’cause they are so good. I am outraged that Disney is not making a movie about SS, but I am still wondering about one thing. Didn’t Fox already make a Spy School movie? Anyway, hope you have more luck with other companies. (Also, just wanted to say, HUGE FAN! CONTINUE THE GREAT WORK!)

  24. A Spy School fanboy –

There is another movie that was made years ago called Spy School that has nothing to do with my series. Fox did not make it. I think an independent company did.

  25. Hey Stu!! Couldn’t you make the movie yourself? You could hire a director, producer and cast? I know budget may be a problem but you have a lot of fans who want to see this movie made so if you set up a GoFundMe it might work! Just a thought 🙂 Thanks for all you do! – Phoebe 🙂

  26. Phoebe

To make and market a movie, you’re talking about and investment of around 20 million dollars. That’s more than most people can raise on GoFundMe. Plus, I don’t have the time to hire all those people, or raise the money. It’s a lot more work than you are making it out to be. Sorry.

  27. stu
not sure what disney means by kidin danger. there isnt really much violence like kids getting shot or anything. maybeit can be a cartoon

  28. nat –

Its not the violence that is the concern. It’s the peril. Like Ben getting shot at.

  29. oh my gosh!!!! no!!!! i absolutely love the spy school books and was so excited for the movie 🙁 if i was a movie producer, i would buy it for sure!!!!!!

  30. What kind of idiots would turn down the best ,movie of the year you are probably gonna find a new place to make it and then when it is a award winning film they can cry themselves to sleep let’s all write angry letters to Disney

  31. Mr Gibbs:

I am really sorry to hear about the spy school movie being cancelled. You must have put a lot of work into it. I really love your books and I hope the movie can come out eventually.

  32. noooooo. evil spy school is my favorite book and i reeeeeeeeelly want to what to watch the movie

  33. What!?!?!?! My friend got me into this and I LOVE THEM! Why do they have to cancel what will be the BEST MOVIE EVER!?!?!

  34. Spy School fanboy-

That’s sorta a good point. In Spiderman: Homecoming, Peter is 15 years old and he gets shot at, has to hold a boat together, gets thrown into a bus and has the bus flipped, gets electrocuted, a building falls on him, and is in a plane crash which lead to him being in a fire and almost exploded. Maybe it’s acceptable for 15 year olds and not 13 year olds

  35. Has anyone actually gotten a response back from Disney? I’ll see if I can message them on a social media platform.

  36. Aiden

I think the reason that it’s different is because the people who would be working on the spy school movie would be in an entirely different part of Disney this movie would be branded as a Disney movie, not as a Marvel movie. The whole purpose of Marvel is pretty much violence (I’m not saying I don’t like marvel I love marvel movies) whereas Disney is branded for little kids.

  37. Definitely go to Warner Bros. They made the harry potters which everyone loves, and are pretty much Disney’s biggest competitor right now.

    Good luck,
    Classified 001

  38. Well, Disney would probably screw it up if they try to adapt the series. Honestly, if there was a movie, I would like it to be pg-13. knowing disney, they would never allow that. Maybe Hbo? Or hulu? Netflix?

  39. This is not fair at all!!!!! Me and my friend really want to watch this movie. We have been waiting FOREVER. But stuart, its not your fault at all

  40. Sucks that the Spy School Movie can’t come out. This has little to do with this but I think that Charlie Throne would make a great movie because of the way it is written/formatted.

  41. I just finished bear gotten and it just makes me even more excited for spy school at sea. My real question is how you answer these questions and write all these amazing books? Plz never ever stop writing sincerely 007

  42. Disney’s awful. First, they ruined Star Wars. Star Wars was so great and then they ruined it with the prequels. Luke is not his real self. Palpatine is supposed to be DEAD.
Second, I’m glad they turned down Spy School because they’d probably just turn it into a MUSICAL.
Plus, Disney has a way of making everything so CORNY. Several movies that I’ve seen convince me that I don’t wanna read the book no matter what. I LOVE Spy School and I love all the jokes that Ben has in his head like, “Mike sagged as if I’d suggested we bash him with rocks.” You can’t put that line of THOUGHT into a movie. Unless the actor says it out loud which, frankly, that’s creepy.
I do not want Spy School to be a movie because there a certain great books that can’t be mimicked into a movie.
Most movie from books can really cringe and I’d hate to see the movie have a bad influence on the reader’s mind.
I have a bad feeling that if this became a movie, there’d be lots of memes. Plus Ben and Erica’s relationship might seem forced.
Plus, I like the maturity and seriousness but Disney might as well turn every good book into a musical.
(I do not have very strong feelings about this. I just want to tell you why a movie could be bad)

  43. Wait, you are actually trying to make a movie???? THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!!!! Man, Disney’s just OUT. Why aren’t they making it??? They have, like, a thousand things like this!!!!

  44. Ella –

Well, we were trying to make a movie. For the past three years. Now we are trying to set up Spy School somewhere else.
