Spy School 9 cover and title reveal

Hey readers.  I know many of you have been very eager for this post.  Ever since Spy School Revolution came out, people have been asking me when I was going to reveal the plot, title and cover for SS9.

Well, here’s the cover — yet another masterful job by Lucy Cummins:

And here is the synopsis:

Thanks to the evidence Ben uncovered in his investigation of the Croatoan, the CIA has tracked his nemesis, Murray Hill, to Central America, where they believe he is boarding the world’s biggest cruise ship, The Emperor of the Seas, on its maiden voyage around the world.

The CIA and MI6 want to find out what Murray is plotting, but to do that, they need to send in the person who knows Murray Hill the best: Ben Ripley. Only Ben can’t be sent in alone. So he’ll be posing as part of a family, with Alexander and Catherine Hale as his parents, Erica as his sister, and his best friend Mike as his brother.

At first, it sounds exciting to have a mission on the most glamorous ocean liner on earth, but as usual, nothing goes according to plan. There is action, danger, and plenty of surprises as Ben and his team quickly find themselves in hot water.

And finally, here is the release date (although, before you get too excited, let me say that I’m still not 100% sure that this is confirmed): August 31, 2021.

I have many favorite books, but I always like to recommend The Westing Game.

  2. Stu-

Do you know any other languages besides English? I mean, how do you get highly detailed facts about places if you don’t speak their language?

  3. Guy-

I know you were asking Stu, but I think he googles things and asks other people who are certified or know what they are talking about

  4. Guy –

I do know languages besides English, but it is not that hard to get facts about places — or to get around a foreign country — in English these days.

  5. Dear Mr Gibbs-

You are a great author and me and my brother are big fans. I love how your books are not like other spy books. Instead, they are more realistic. I know some things in them are fake but I like how in your books you use facts and show us how it would be very difficult to be a spy. I also like how each of your books teaches me something new. Like Major General Braddocks cypher, and how Goerge Washington was the first spy master. I really love your books and I encourage you to write more awesome books!

P.S. Will, you be doing any book signings when Covid is over? Because I would really like to get my book signed by you.

    Keep being awesome!

  6. Student of the Academy –

Ideally, once Covid is over, I will return to doing signings.

However, if you want a personalized copy of my books at any time, please see my Signed Books page on this site.

  7. This is not really a question but I love how spy school revolution looks when you take off the cover. Also the cover is good too.

  8. Alexander Hale –

That release date is almost 100% confirmed, but not completely 100%.

  9. Mr.Gibbs-
is it possible since emperor of the seas is going around the the world and Charlie Thorne is rich and is lying low is there a possibility she will be in spy school at sea on the cruise or Ben describing a 12 year old girl with Charlie’s traits on the boat?

  10. Mr.Gibbs

I think in one of your spy school you should have a back to school shopping list

It would go something like this

    1. knifes
    3. Bullets

  11. Stu-

In ssbi there is a line in the book which is confusing. When they are in the paris in the museum how did looking back when the police officer shouted give them away?

  12. Someone –

In the scene you are referring to, there are three ways turning back gives them away:

    1) If you yell something like ‘Stop, thief!’ in a crowd, the person who turns around and looks back at you if much more likely to be the thief than someone who does not turn back.

    2) Ben’s friends’ reactions also gave them away after they turned around.

    3) In turning back, they show their faces to the guard, who is able to then recognize them as the people who parachuted onto the building.

  13. Mr.Gibbs,
Can you make a book were Ben has to go to Japan? Murray Hill could be plotting to set Japan on fire. Using nuclear bombs, He has help from… Leo Shang! You could bring him back. Plus can you make Trixie the newest recruit at spy school? She could have a crush on Mike. And Jessica could help Ben thwart Her dad.

  14. At the end of spy school revolution it said that someone wants a pet squirrel monkey for her birthday, will she be mentioned in ss book 9 as a character ?

  15. Stu-
This isn’t about books but you should really try huckleberry ice cream. Its really good but hard to get since huckleberry is mostly found in the Northwest. You should try it!

  16. This isn’t about ss book 9 but what year does the spy school series take place ? Because the first spy school book came out on 2012 so is the year according to the books 2013 ?

  17. Stu-

Are you in the Stuart General discord server? some people say you are and others don’t so i’m confused

  18. Anonymouse –

I appreciate your enthusiasm but can’t really take suggestions from readers. I have nothing against Japan, though.

  19. Burn –

I wrote the books to feel relatively timeless. So that any time you read a SS book, it could feel as though it is happening right now. (Of course, this doesn’t really work during a pandemic. But once the pandemic is over, they ought to feel timeless again.)

  20. Stu
Have you ever thought about spy school going farther in to the world, like asia, Australia, Africa etc..?
Also I understand if this is classified but what happened to Tina?

  21. sydpwr –

One of the fun things about the SS series is that it can go almost anywhere in the world i want it to. So yes, it could go farther.

And what happened to Tina is classified.

  22. Burn –

The Soy School series is written to feel current in whatever year that you read it — although that doesn’t work so much when there is a pandemic.

  23. will Murray be the only evil person on emperor of the Seas or will there be like there owner or captain who is working with Murray and his evil schemes?

  24. Stu, when you are reading the comments of these do you ever see someone make a suggestion that you actually already put in that book? What does that make you feel like or think about?

  25. stu, does the start of the book start out in the hospital like how SS book 8 ended or will it be after that ? And will Trixie be a character?

  26. Spy School Enthusiast –

Yes, sometimes someone suggests something that I have already put in a book. (Although it doesn’t happen that often, unless their suggestion is very basic, like ‘You should have Ben and Erica go on a mission together.’) It makes me think that person will be very pleased when they read that scene.

  27. stu,

is there any information about the next book that isnt classified but nobody asked you it yet?

  28. Dhruv –

As I said in this post, I am not going to share any more info about what happens in the book. It is all classified. The less you know, the more fun the book is to read.

  29. These books are amazing! Every chapter gets me hooked. I can go through a whole book in one day with this great writing. Keep up the great work!!

  30. Dear Stuart Gibbs,
Hi I have so many questions but my top one is… Has Erica had any abuse or stress put on her as a little girl? In Evil Spy School Erica says “Frankly, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more. Having high expectations placed on you at a young age can create a lot of emotional strain.” There was something in Erica’s voice that made me think this statement was based on experience rather than guesswork.” And second… Mike is still in search for a girlfriend! I think that trixie A). Would be the perfect GF for Mike.
B). Should be the newest Recruit for spy school.
I have an Idea for SS 12 Japan could be threatened to bomb Pearl Harbor again. Or else Murrey hill and wait for it.. Leo Shang! If Japan doesn’t then Leo and Murray will blow up the Prime ministers house. The second in command is Murray Hill. So the prime minister does it but he slipps a coded massage to Cyrus Hale. Cyrus takes Ben and his team… including Trixie to Japan. When Ben thinks he’s figured out the scheme things turn. It turns out that The Threatning and Bombing was a distraction from the fact that Murray and Leo are going to wash Japan away by Nuking a fault line in the ocean to Create a Huge tsunami! At the final Fight Ben gets injured by a bullet. But he doesn’t die. You could bring back the idea from the first book… We’re Ben thinks that he wouldn’t mind a bullet scar across his face. Only in his leg not face. What do you think I know it’s crazy… But hey it’s a book!
P.S were you ever a Spy? Just curious.
    – Annonamouse
    And yes that says mouse.

  31. That’s Nothing Dhruv I read the whole book on two hours. It was awesome and I remember everything that happened!

  32. Annonamouse –

Erica was not abused, but anyone who has been trained from an early age to do something certainly has been subjected to stress. In addition, she has the additional stress of not really having a choice as to what she will do with her life.

As for your suggestions, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I really can’t take ideas from readers.

Finally, if I was a spy, I couldn’t really admit that I was a spy, right?

  33. I just got the westing game from the library! I might be able to finish it in around 2 hours if im interested. Going to start reading it in about 30mins!!

  34. I’m not sure if anyone noticed the easter egg in charlie thorn and the lost city.

Robert fitzroy, captain of the beagle. Sound familiar?

Robert is Teddy Fitzroys great great grandpa or something

  35. Jawa –

That is not an Easter Egg, exactly.

I was originally going to make Teddy’s last name Darwin in the FunJungle series, as an homage to Charles Darwin feel like the name worked. So I named Teddy after the captain of the HMS Beagles, Robert FitzRoy. At the time, I had no idea that I would need to include the actual Robert FitzRoy in a future book.
