Books you should be reading right now

Hi everyone.  I have been getting a lot of mail from readers telling me that they have read all my books and now want to know what to read next.  I have already done one list, but now I’m going to do one that is a bit more targeted.

These are very tough times in our country.  First, COVID-19 forced us to isolate and upended our lives, and now our country is confronting the issues of our own entrenched racism head on.

Reading teaches us empathy.  So here is a list of great books that can help you do that.

Ideally, it would be great if you ordered these from bookshop.org or your local indie bookstore.

Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi, just came out and could not have been published at a more appropriate time.

Genesis Begins Again by Alicia D. Williams has won so many awards, they can barely all fit on the cover.  And it deserves them all — and more.

The Parker Inheritance, by the very talented Varian Johnson, is a great mystery with great characters that will also really make you think.

New Kid, a graphic novel by Jerry Craft, has also won a slew of awards.  And deservedly so.

How It Went Down by Kekla Magoon is a Coretta Scott King honor book.

You have probably already heard of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.  But still, if you haven’t read it, you should.

Slay by Brittney Morris is a great, fun read that will also illuminate you.

So check these out.  And, of course, there are many, many more great books out there.  So if you’re feeling cooped up, upset, frustrated or angry about what is happening in the world, take some time to read.

Given that Ben is so reliant on his friends, I’d say that he is an extrovert.

I have no idea why Spy School is more popular. I don’t buy the books. I just write them.

  3. Selena –

I have not read every book on this list, but I have read most. There are plenty of other lists out there and I took some of these books from those lists.

  4. Stu-

It makes sense that you don’t wanna have Teddy and Summer have too much of a complex relationship since Spy School leans so hard into that aspect. One thought I had, however, was that it would be very interesting to have the public find out Teddy is Summer’s boyfriend. That was brought up in Tyrannosaurus Wrecks, and it seemed like something that would make for a great secondary problem in a FunJungle book. Actually, now that I think about it, you probably have already thought about this. If so, what has been your thoughts about doing this?

  5. So I’m sitting down in my room and reading SS6 and get to the end (SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT)…And then Ben puts his head on Zoe’s shoulder and fell asleep, then it got me thinking: “What if Ben and Zoe started dating from that point on and Erica got jealous (Seeing as she was a tiny bit jealous when Ben and Zoe were holding hands) then she did attempt to kill Ben in SS Revolution?” Then I’m thinking: “No way, Erica wouldn’t destroy her entire spying career just to kill a boy” “Then again there was an entire huge organization which almost destroyed the world, that wanted to kill been for thwarting them”
So I ended up having like an entire conversation/argument with myself and finally came to the thought: “What if Ben and Zoe start dating but, Erica doesn’t try to kill Ben but someone else did that knew Erica was jealous and saw it was the perfect motive to make it look like she wanted him dead, but if that was the case then the organization or person that tried to kill Ben had been watching them for a very long time and took this time to strike seeing as they felt victorious and there wasn’t the possibility that someone like Cyrus would just tell them to stop focusing on this new organization or person and work on defeating SPYDER like he did many times before and missed something big, also proving that they would’ve been watching then for a while.”
I have no idea why I have the mind of a criminal but whatever. There is a very large possibility that what I’m saying is total rubbish and not even remotely close to what happens. But anyways I felt like I should share this with everyone.
-Aiden O. (Sorry for any typos in this that I didn’t fix)

  6. Aiden-

While not said in the most articulate way (that comment could have been half the size and still have conveyed all of what you said) I do think your thoughts are valid, and quite interesting. I applaud you on the good theory!

It only makes sense to do something if I feel it advances the story of the book I am writing.

  8. Hey Stu –
Two days ago I not only had finished Tyrannosaurs Wrecks but also Waste of Space. When I finished Waste of Space, I started to feel sad that the series was over, and I’ve never done this with any book before. It is the first time I’ve finished one of your series, and I think this is the reason I am sad. (SLIGHT SPOILER) I am also sorry for Dash, who has to go back to Earth (even though MBA was horrible. He still wished he could be there). Keep writing books! I think yours are better than other people’s books because of the detail and imagination you put into them!

  9. Noah –

You will see the cover when I have the cover, which takes time to make. And I will post the synopsis then. Could still be a few weeks.

  10. Ok so I don’t know if anyone has ever done this before, but it would be cool if in like a book series the front covers when lined up made like some larger picture, like for example what if in the Charlie throne series on the cover of the first book it had them sunning off the page and like that side of the page had a little bit of overgrowth from the next cover and it continued the character adventure. I have seen things like this done with the spines of a boom but never with the cover. Also the mural of book covers would probably have to be part of a rerelease or Somthing if anyone did do it because they would have to know what the cover of the next book needed to look like.

Also I apologize for any spelling mistakes I did not fix- Bassy

  11. Stu-
I love all of your books! (Due to COVID-19 I have been reading a to of your books) Could you add another character in the ss books? Maybe Mike hanges out with this charcter more and Ben gets jealous and ruins the mission getting them captured.

    -Ian

PS.Maybe you could name the charcter Ian.

  12. Ian –

I add new characters in every SS book. Please see my FAQ about why I can’t name characters after everyone who asks.

  13. Can you release spy school revolution earlier than October also what is the next book you plan on righting in the spy school series.

  14. Caden-

Yeah my bad, I meant SS7, thanks for correcting me ?

    -Aiden O.

    Oreo-

Yeah, I could’ve made the comment smaller but I have a tendency to writing quite a lot when I’ve been doing it for a while, and thanks for your thoughts on my theory. I really appreciate it!

    -Aiden O.

  15. Survival –

Please read my recent post on how COVID is affecting SS8.

I am not revealing anything about SS9 until I have written the book.

  16. Aiden-
When the smiley face emoji showed up on my comment I was kind of confused because I just typed a colon and parentheses. Thank you to all of you guys keeping up on these comments, I love getting on here every day and reading them!

  17. -Bassy
The old cover designs for Percy Jackson had covers that connected, while the newer editions have the spine connecting

  18. Lol my Charlie Thorne book rankings are as follows:

    1. Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation

  19. Stu, unfortunately I have not been able to get to a library for quite some time for obvious reasons. Do you know of any legal way to be reading books online without having to pay because I read fast and go through many books and don’t want to spend money if I don’t have to. By the way, I loved your books since I was 9 and am still reading and rereading them today.

  20. Mr. Gibbs, I have 2 ideas for future SS books.

    1. Jemma and Jason Stern have been kidnapped by an unknown villain saying that if President Stern runs again, he’ll kill them, and it’s up to Ben and gang to rescue them in time.

    2. An unknown villain places bombs underwater near the volcanoes of Hawaii, trying to trigger an eruption and tsunamis, causing chaos, mayhem, and destruction, and it’s up to Ben and gang to stop them.

On another note, how is that all the SPYDER villains know that their evil? In real life, evil people don’t know they’re evil. Thank you for your time!

  21. Hey Stu I was just wondering what you think of hunting ( not poaching but legal hunting) . I know in your books some of your characters have implied that they don’t like it but I would like to know your view on it. Thanks!

  22. At least we know that if it takes this long to find out about CT 2, then Lucy Ruth Cummins is doing a great cover, Liz Kossnar is doing some great editing and Hilary Zarycky is doing some great formatting.
Can’t wait to see what they do!

  23. Bassy-
I know you asked Mr. Gibbs, but personally Timeline is my fav Crichton novel. Jurassic Park and the Lost World hang in 2nd (if you saw the Lost World movie, you should definitely read the book. It’s way better!)

  24. ultra beast –

    Thanks for the ideas.

If you read ESS, it discusses how SPYDER gets evil recruits. Also, my characters generally are well-aware that they are evil. But please note, these books are fiction, not real life.

  25. Whit –

I am not a big fan of hunting, myself. But I can see the arguments for it and recognize that, if managed well, it can be ok.

  26. Mr. Gibbs-

In Poached, you said that Teddy’s school has a seating arrangement where the cool kids sit in the middle, the lesser cool kids sit around them, the normal kids around them, and the nerds in the corners. Where would Vance Jessup and the Barksdales sit?

  27. Happy Birthday Stu! I hope you’re not too disappointed you can’t really go anywhere. Anyway i decided that i would donate to the world wildlife fund I know how much you care about animals. You’re my favorite author in the world and you have the best books in the world. I hope you have an amazing birthday!

    – my little pony rocks

  28. Happy birthday! I hope you have an amazing birthday with a good cake, and lots of presents. What are you planning for you birthday anyways? Have an amazing day!

  29. Do you remember Stu saying that two book series are in the same universe but he won’t tell us which ones? Well I haven’t figured it out but I know it can’t be Spy School and Charlie Thorne because the director of the CIA in Spy School is mentioned by Erica as being a man. But in Charlie Thorne, the director of the CIA is shown as being a woman. So, that’s my logic on that.

  30. Whit –

Thanks for the offer, but if it’s not clear from my books, I don’t like hunting personally.
