Another Spy School movie update

Hello everyone!  Here is a very small holiday present for you…  An update on the Spy School movie.

As you may recall, when I last updated you, back in March, Fox, the studio that had bought Spy School, had been acquired by Disney.  This created what we refer to in the movie business as a ‘mess.’  The merger of two enormous media companies takes a long time to sort out.

But that finally happened, more or less.  And from somewhere on high, Disney said we could proceed with developing Spy School.

So I am now at work on a rewrite of the first draft.  This does not mean that the movie is going to get made.  It only means that we are moving forward.  Which is better than Fox/Disney (or ‘Fisney’) deciding to dump the project.

I will post some answers to the questions I am getting asked the most.  Avid readers may notice that I may have answered some of these before.  But I keep getting asked them.  Over and over and over.  So here we go:

Which book is the movie based on?

The first one in the series.  Spy School.

Will there be sequels based on the other books?

Ideally, but that depends on how the first movie does.  There is a slight chance that, if Fisney loves the script, they will decide to move ahead with a sequel before the first movie comes out, but I wouldn’t count on that.

Is the movie going to be live action or animated?

Live action.

Can I be in it?

I really don’t know.  I will probably have no say in casting at all.  There are people who handle casting for a living.  They are called casting directors.  They don’t ask me if they can help write my movies — and therefore, they are not pleased if I show up and say that I want to help cast the movie.  I don’t know if they will have open auditions for the roles.  My bet is that they won’t.  But if they do, all I can do is write a blog post with details.  So please please please please please do not write to me and ask if you can be in the movie.

When will the movie come out?

I don’t know that either.  The absolute earliest would be in a year, and I highly doubt that would happen.  So don’t count on it any time soon.

Is it going to be released in theaters — or could it show up on Disney Plus?

Personally, I would love for it to be released theatrically — so that’s what we are shooting for.  But the fact is, Disney needs a lot of content for Disney Plus, so that remains an option.  (Also, if it was made for Disney Plus, there is a chance that sequels could be started earlier.)

What is your favorite color?

Why are you even asking that?  This is a blog about Spy School, the movie.

Because I’m just interested.  Is there something wrong with that?

I suppose not.  My favorite color is blue.

Thanks.  You’re amazing.

So are you.  Happy holidays!

  1. Stuart-
Alright, I will do that next time. I had just figured that because so many people were talking about Joshua Hallal, I could talk about John Russo.

  2. Ben Ripley-
That sounds like a good idea, seeing as someone is, let’s say, sharing, my identity. But I think I’ll continue commenting with the same name for now. Hopefully, you can differentiate me from any impersonators or such by the manner in which I speak.

    Oh, and other Joshua Hallal-
    Your dash was mislocated.

  3. Other Joshua Hallal-
Hopefully, people will be able to tell us apart from one another by our different manners of speaking. If anyone else is reading this who has the same name as another commenter, I suggest that they try to create a distinction between themselves and whoever is sharing their name by using a different tone of voice.

  4. Who is the real Joshua Hallal???
P.S. Erica Hale are we still doing the pretend to be a character thing?

  5. Ok for everyone who will be doing this posting/acting thing then post what character you will be doing with a number 6 then the username you will be using when posting

For Ex: Murray Hill 6, Posting Name: Murray Hill_bacon

This is in order for us to be able to organize who’s going to be who. Let’s do this!

    Erica Hale

  6. Update: On a top-secret mission (can’t tell you about it though…it’s top-secret)
Anyone have a spare tranquilizer I can use? Knocking all those bad guys out by hand is getting boring.

  7. Ben Ripley-
I am the real Joshua Hallal; that other person probably just planned to comment only once. (If you saw three comments by a Joshua on this page, that was all me. I was talking to that other Joshua Hallal, who commented only once, as far as I can tell.)

    Erica Hale-
Joshua Hallal 6, Joshua Hallal (If there turns out to be someone else using that name, they’ll have to change it. I’m keeping this.)

  8. Y’all should probably chill with the acting thing lol. You’re kinda clogging the chat. Maybe you could do it on discord or something.

  9. F,
What is the problem you’re having with the acting thing. It’s honestly cool, and there is no reason to tell people to chill.

  10. Yes I have a few when should I bring them to you Erica? Also, when is that test on Escaping The Enemy?

  11. also we should do this on other post and identify our selves by saying this is Ben.Ripley.11 Ben Ripley_06 from the character acting thing from the movie post
    Ben Ripley_06
PS are we supposed to sign it Ben RIpley_06 and post name Ben.ripley.11

  12. -Erica Hale_09

Erica, this seems way too over complicated. But if it works… then I guess, it works.

  13. I used to live in Chicago then I moved to north carolina , I wish I was still there

  14. Erica I have three darts in my dorm, when should I should I bring them to you? Also when is that test on Escaping the Enemy? I kind of got distracted…
    Ben Ripley6

  15. Ben, seriously? The test is tomorrow. Let me guess, you didn’t even prepare. Anyways, don’t need the darts anymore, I already knocked them out.

    -Erica Hale

  16. I’m sorry Erica, but I’ve been really busy and I did prepare I studied really hard last night.
    -Ben Ripley6

  17. Erica are you going to be back from your mission tomorrow because like you said the test is tomorrow?
    -Ben Ripley6
p.s. Mike come by my dorm after dinner(if you can) I have something to show you

  18. Well it’s not really my problem if you fail the test Ben. I just came back from my mission so I’m tired. Which means that you aren’t gonna come running into my room to ask for help. ITS NOT HAPPENING. Also if I were you I wouldn’t announce to everyone that you need to tell Mike something. Everyone’s gonna bug your room now to hear what you two are talking bout. But again, that’s not really my problem.

    Erica Hale

  19. Hey Ben, I heard that you wanted to show me something. Sorry for barging into your room, but you said it was important
    Mike 6

  20. Hey, not to be rude but I think this is for questions for Stuart about the movie. I am really really not trying to be rude so please don’t send me hate. Sorry
Have you finished any of the script yet? The reason I am asking is because I know you have been working on your books and wanted to know if the movie was still on.

  21. Ace fist –

    stuartgibbs1 on Instagram.

If you forget, it’s at the bottom of every single page of this website.

  22. don’t ask –

I am working on the third draft of the script. I am doing everything i can to keep this moviw going forward.

  23. Is Murray gonna be a twist villain in the movie too? I know Disney likes it’s twist villains, but with the change in perspective (Ben not being our “eyes”), it would be interesting if he had time to be a proper villain, even if only in the shadows. I love scenes with Murray, but honestly he was the most interesting (for me) in evil spy school, because he didn’t have to hide being evil. I just think it’ll be predictable to everyone that Murray’s the villain (by Disney twist villain logic it’s either him or Zoe, and she barely got any time in the first few books.)

  24. Ksnsjkwhn

Well…. The movie follows the book. Just like every movie that has ever been based on a book before follows the book, more or less. In theory, lots of people who haven’t read the book will see the movie, and lots of people who have read the book will want the movie to be as true to the book as possible. (If you doubt me, read a few hundred of the comments I’ve gotten.) So… the bad guy doesn’t change. Sorry.

  25. Erica and Mike-
OK Erica I’m sorry, I am just super nervous for this test. The last one I took didn’t go so well and Professor Simons said I fight like a two year old wearing handcuffs, so if I’m acting a bit nervous it’s because of the test. And Mike, I was going to tell ask you if you could help me study for the test but it’s too late because today is the test.
