Spy School movie update

Hi everyone –

Lots of you have written to ask me about the potential Spy School movie.  Most of you have one of three questions, which I am going to answer here for everyone to see:

Q: Is the movie going to stick closely to the book?

A: That is my plan.  I have written the first draft of the screenplay.  So far, it stays close to the book, although since it is a movie and not a book, I have made some changes.  They’re not huge, and some might be quite funny, but they were necessary.  I’m sure that things will change, though.  For one thing, the script is a little too long, which probably means a scene or two will need to be cut – so be aware, there’s a good chance that something you like from the book might not be in the movie.

Q: When will the movie come out?

A: I have no idea.  I don’t even know IF it will ever come out.  The problem with getting a movie made is that it is very expensive.  So a lot of things need to fall into place for the movie to happen.  Here’s the progress so far:

I will certainly have to write more drafts of the movie.  I am waiting to get notes from the studio.  However, Fox is the company that bought the idea — but Fox is currently being purchased by Disney.  This is a massive corporate merger and it is slowing the project down.

The best I can say is that, if this movie did get made, the very earliest it could possibly be in theaters is fall 2020.  And that is an extreme long shot.

Q: When is it going to cast and can I try out for it?

A: I know, technically, that’s two questions, but I am always asked them together.  Anyhow, the simple answer is: I don’t know when it will cast, and the chances are probably very slim that you can try out for it.  Sorry.  I do not control casting.  In fact, I probably won’t have any say over casting at all.

I suppose there is a slight possibility that Fox/Disney might decide to have an open casting call for roles in the movie, in which case maybe anyone who wants to try out can do so, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

If there is an open casting call, I will certainly post about it here.

I know that’s not a ton of news, but it’s all I have.  Stay tuned to this site for more developments.

UPDATE JULY 22, 2019

Really, all this update is saying is that I have no new information.  But I’m adding it because many of you have been writing to me expressing disbelief that I still don’t have any news to report.  Well folks, that’s the way the movie industry works.  I wish I had more news.  Really. No one wants this movie to get made more than I do.  Except maybe my children.

  1. Stu-

Are there going to be completely new characters (One’s that have never been introduced and will be crucial to the series) in SS9?

  2. I love these books. I’ve read all of them. are you going to write another series?

  3. Does anyone have any idea how Joshua hallal’s character works? He seems to be a fighter against injustice (with evil means) in 2, cold and collected in 3, over the top movie villain who enjoys it in 6, and just hatred fueled in 7. He’s always entertaining, but it is less consistent than the other characters.

  4. Hey,
So is there gonna be an SS9 cuz they (SPOILERS) beat SPYDER?
And is it Zoe and Ben or Erica
Last but not least, thanks for the great books!

  5. Did Joshua Hallal and Erica Hale date? In Spy Camp it says they just liked one another but in British Invasion it said something twice about Joshua being Erica’s Ex.

  6. Hi Stuart! I was just wondering (because I don’t keep up with most information :p) what the movie is going to be about. What book will it be based off of?
I am obsessed with Spy School books, and am re-reading one again right now. (Spy Ski School-it’s my favorite) And when I heard about this movie coming out, I was like, “say what now? They’re turning the best book ever into a movie?” So I would like to know a little more about it. Thanks! (:

I haven’t finished writing SS8 let alone thought about writing SS9. But there are always new characters in a book.

  8. GoNinja

Because the more you know about what is going to happen the less fun it is to read a book

  9. I know you don’t take ideas from readers but I’ve got a pretty good idea for a Spy School book based on the movie Its A Wonderful Life
Alexander thinks that since he’s such a bad spy, the CIA would be better if he never existed. but then Ben tells him what the world would be like if he never existed. One of the things that would happen is that a bunch of cities in Europe and the United States would be destroyed because he wasn’t there to fly Ben, Erica, Catherine, Zoe, and Mike to the Eiffel Tower to stop the EMP generator

People don’t stay the same forever. They change. Especially when their enemies keep thwarting their evil plans. And they keep losing body parts.

  11. Matteo

I think you are asking will there be a SS8 since British Invasion was 7. Yes there will. And all future relationship status is classified.

  12. Rachel

Erica doesn’t date. But she did like Joshua. So there was at least an emotional connection.

  13. Will Erica ever change the way she thinks about relationships and missions together?

  14. Katie –

You’re asking the author if his own book is good? Space Case may be one of the finest books ever written in human history.

  15. Nice book yeah but there is no way Cyrus can pardon ben from the 15 crimes he commited in BI alone. That kid has done more stuff than Murray at this point

  16. Bruh –

If James Bond was held responsible for all the crimes he’d committed, he’d have been in jail for several lifetimes. In spy fiction, the spies are allowed to do whatever is necessary to defeat evil.

  17. book enthusiast –

Not to sound snarky, but if you look at the right hand side of every single page of this website, you will find an upcoming releases box with the answer to your question.
