Spy School movie update

Hi everyone –

Lots of you have written to ask me about the potential Spy School movie.  Most of you have one of three questions, which I am going to answer here for everyone to see:

Q: Is the movie going to stick closely to the book?

A: That is my plan.  I have written the first draft of the screenplay.  So far, it stays close to the book, although since it is a movie and not a book, I have made some changes.  They’re not huge, and some might be quite funny, but they were necessary.  I’m sure that things will change, though.  For one thing, the script is a little too long, which probably means a scene or two will need to be cut – so be aware, there’s a good chance that something you like from the book might not be in the movie.

Q: When will the movie come out?

A: I have no idea.  I don’t even know IF it will ever come out.  The problem with getting a movie made is that it is very expensive.  So a lot of things need to fall into place for the movie to happen.  Here’s the progress so far:

I will certainly have to write more drafts of the movie.  I am waiting to get notes from the studio.  However, Fox is the company that bought the idea — but Fox is currently being purchased by Disney.  This is a massive corporate merger and it is slowing the project down.

The best I can say is that, if this movie did get made, the very earliest it could possibly be in theaters is fall 2020.  And that is an extreme long shot.

Q: When is it going to cast and can I try out for it?

A: I know, technically, that’s two questions, but I am always asked them together.  Anyhow, the simple answer is: I don’t know when it will cast, and the chances are probably very slim that you can try out for it.  Sorry.  I do not control casting.  In fact, I probably won’t have any say over casting at all.

I suppose there is a slight possibility that Fox/Disney might decide to have an open casting call for roles in the movie, in which case maybe anyone who wants to try out can do so, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

If there is an open casting call, I will certainly post about it here.

I know that’s not a ton of news, but it’s all I have.  Stay tuned to this site for more developments.

UPDATE JULY 22, 2019

Really, all this update is saying is that I have no new information.  But I’m adding it because many of you have been writing to me expressing disbelief that I still don’t have any news to report.  Well folks, that’s the way the movie industry works.  I wish I had more news.  Really. No one wants this movie to get made more than I do.  Except maybe my children.

That is such a run on sentence I’m not even 100% sure what you are saying. Please learn to use periods. They help people comprehend what you mean.

  5. Hi, your books are great. I am on book 7 its great. you really should make a movie my teacher is reading book 1 I recommended it to him I am 11 years old. well please wright your response back.

  6. what scenes will you have to disclude in the movie because of price or other things?
My name is Tushaan by the way.

  7. Tushaan –

I am trying to include as many scenes from the book as I can and still don’t know what I will have to lose.

  8. Hello Mr. Gibbs,
I am a teacher and I use the Funjungle series as a read aloud for my students. The stories are wonderful and have many valuable skills to teach my students. The number one question I receive from my students is, “Will these ever become a movie?” I read about Spy School, but couldn’t find any comments about the Funjungle series. Do you think there is a chance this could happen someday?
Thanks for the time and your dedication,
    Zack

  9. Zack –

I would love for the FunJungle series to be turned into movies, but getting anything to be a movie is a long, hard slog. The FunJungle series would require lots of sets and animals — or hybridized CGI — both of which are somewhat expensive. So it’s nt the easiest sell.

  10. So, I have been wondering if there was another Spy School, would there be another evil organization? Or, would it be just that there was more people that were some the heads of SPYDER that try to accomplish their plan or scheme?

  11. Faith –

There will be another Spy School. Read my blog for more details. That said, I am not ready to answer your questions. That info is currently classified.

  12. Hi Mr. Gibbs! I’m a reader from when you released your very first book and have shared them with my whole family! My favorite series by far is Spy School. I was just wondering why in Spy School Goes South, you mentioned Ben looking at Zoe, (she’s my favorite character) and him noticing her big BROWN eyes. I looked back at the first book though to confirm what I thought, which is the fact that you stated Zoe had GREEN eyes. Why did you decide to change it? Or was it just an editing mistake?

  13. Oscar –

Please read my post about why there will not be another MBA. Setting something at MBB won’t change those problems.

  14. Tyler –

I only go to book festivals that I am invited to. I have yet to be invited to a festival in Mexico.

  15. Hi Mr. Gibbs, I just started reading spy school and I really love it. You came to my school, Cunningham Park Elementary school in Vienna, VA. I got really interested in your books. Why did you choose Vienna instead of ant other town or city?

  16. Katie –

I picked Vienna somewhat randomly. I wanted a suburb of DC so that Ben would live close to where the Spy School was located — and I had a friend from Vienna, so I had visited it once.

  17. hi I am one of your readers my name is Alan and i Just have to say I love your spy school books thay make me so happy and I love everything about that universe and I support everything you do

  18. Jacob –

No one has approved the Spy School movie yet, so the fastest it could possibly come out would probably be two years from now — if we’re lucky.

  19. Hi Stuart, I adore your books and I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind visiting my library in Winchester, Ontario, Canada. It would mean the world to my cousin and I,well if they give you an invitation?!? PLEASE!!!!

  20. Addie –

I honestly can’t do that many school visits a year any more, but if your school is interested, then have them go to my School Visits page on this site.

  21. -Stuart

Thank you sooo much for responding and I will give the principle your website. Your my favourite author In the hole world!!!!

  22. Addie –

Look at the top of every single page of my website and you will see a list of pages on the website in the header. One of them is the School Visits site. It is called… ‘School Visits.’

  23. My 12 year-old son who usually doesn’t like to read, is on the 2nd book of the Spy series — “Spy Camp.” He has been telling me since reading “Spy School” that he can SO SEE this being a movie, and that I should read it and turn it into a screenplay. I’m a screenwriter, and my son has been nagging me to read the book. I thought i’d check to see if I could buy the rights to then write the script. Low and behold, the adaptation is well on its way! Super exciting that this will — HOPEFULLY — one day be a film. My son would love to see the “Spy School” movie. Best of luck with getting all the pieces together. 🙂

  24. Isabella –

Yes, the movie is moving ahead — at the standard slow rate that movies go. But I’m still hoping everything works out.

  25. Tyler –

It is harder to do a book with pictures than without because you need an artist. My books appear to work well without pictures so… no pictures.

  26. Will the spy kids movie be a cartoon or anime or with actors please respond I love ur books their interesting and entertaining
