20th Century Fox acquires Spy School movie rights

When I posted a little while ago that I had some big news coming, this was not the big news I was talking about.

But this is still very good news.

For all of you who have been asking about when one of my book series might be turned into a movie, the first step has taken place.

20th Century Fox, which has done the film versions of books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Night at the Museum and Percy Jackson, has acquired the rights to make Spy School.

Here are some things to know:

  1. I am going to write the screenplay.
  2. The fact that there is a movie deal is by no means any guarantee that there will actually be a movie.
  3. If there is a movie, it could be a long time until that happens.
  4. We might not be casting for years.  So please don’t write asking if you can be in the movie.

You can learn more about the deal here.

PS that other news — about the new series — is still coming.

  1. Yay! My mom, brother, and I like to cast the characters of your books!! My brother is always Murray! LOL Can’t wait to see if this happens! Congrats!

  2. I’m soooooo excited that Spy School will be made into a movie! Stuart Gibbs is right up there with J.K. Rowling on my list of favorite authors. I really want to be Erica/Zoe, but I’m not a famous child actor, so I probably won’t make it. Plus, the only things with the characters I have in common is black hair(Erica) and age(Zoe). Excited to see the movie though!

  3. I am so exited that they might come out with a movie for Spy School, I have been waiting for this for a long time. Hopefully he they can make it for all of the book’s.

  4. Stu-
How much of a say for the character’s ages do you think you’ll have? I know that 20th Century Fox isn’t usually very accurate with ages. For example, Percy Jackson, a character in his early teens, was played by an actor who was in his late teens.

  5. Maddie –

I think the Fox is well aware that increasing the age of Percy Jackson didn’t go over that well with readers.

  6. Can you post if the movie will be adapted. Thank you! I am a huge fan of your books. I have read the series at least 8 times. Thank you again

  7. Izzy –

I’m not sure exactly what you mean when you ask if it will be adapted. The movie is going to be based on the first spy school book and I am the one writing the screenplay.

  8. Stu –

I think Izzy meant it is positive that the movie is happening, because in the post, you said IF there is a movie, indicating it might not happen.

  9. I’m so excited for this movie if it happens. I also think that the moon base alpha series would make a great film or tv series!!

  10. Alanna –

I have no way of knowing whether or not the movie will happen at this time. I can only hope everything falls into place, just like you.

  11. Stu-

Hi! What age would Erica have to be? And what about Zoey? Are you still writing books for the series? I just want to say, I am really thankful for the books that you write.

  12. Agent Zibbell –

Ideally Erica and Zoe would be as close to the ages as the characters in the books as possible.

I am still writing books for the series.

  13. First of all, I am a huge fan of Spy school series and Space case series, I am also very interested in the movie. Any idea when it is coming out?

  14. Nacho –

The earliest the movie could possibly come out is about two years from now. And that is highly unlikely.

  15. Does Zoe have blond hair and brown eyes?
Cause if she does I can totaly rock that role.

-I take karate (im a brown belt), krav maga, and i’ve been acting from a
young age (however, not in movies yet)

-I’m 13, so i’m the perfect age, height, skill, and experience to play Zoe

I have also read all your books at LEAST twice, (especialy spy school), so I know the books inside out.

    Please consider

Will the movie combine some of the books (exp. books 1-4) or just the first one?
If it’s only the first couple of books there should be a TO BE CONTINUED!

BTW, I love the 6th book!

  17. Hi Stuart! I love your book series, and am really looking forward to watching the movie if it comes out. Erica is a great character.

  18. Hi I was wandering if you would consider letting auditions be online so that people who don’t live in the place where u do auditions still have a shot for the role.

  19. SpottyGamer –

I think readers would be pretty upset to find that Mike had been changed to a girl. And it would alter the dynamics of the plot later on. I’m not saying that Mike couldn’t suddenly be a lesbian, but Ben’s issues with Erica having a possible crush on him wouldn’t work any more.

  20. Stu- Don’t some really good books get turned into horrible movies. That’s what I’m worried about, like see what happened to farenheit 451.

  21. Wondering –

The book is always better than the movie. But I’ll do my best to make the script as close to the book as possible.

  22. Hi Mr Gibbs!!
Just for fun, do you have a dream cast in mind?
I saw Daddy’s Home 2 and the whole time I was thinking: Man, Mel Gibson would be an amazing Cyrus Hale!!
Do you have any favorite actors/actresses in mind?
Thanks for your time and I love your books!!

  23. Hey Stu, lemme cut this short,

    1. I love your books
    2. I got a signed copy of Spy School: Goes South
    3. I will most likely audition to play Ben unless someone else fits me better, I think i fit the description of Ben Prefect though, (Brown Hair) (Not Muscular) Etc

  24. Stu-
Like someone else also commented, could you do the auditions online for people who don’t live near? Also, do you think Fox will let actors of different ethnicities play the roles? They changed Grover’s skin color in Percy Jackson and that got a lot of criticism.

  25. Hey I don’t want to audition but I was always wanting a movie on spy school and if it comes out years later I will still love to watch it keep the work up

  26. AgentKim –

I will have no say at all in how auditions are conducted. That said, as you may have noticed, I don’t really specify what anyone’s skin color is in Spy School. So no one should be able to get upset if we cast people of different ethnicities. (They probably will anyhow.) Personally, I think we should cast the best people for each role, no matter what ethnicity they are.

  27. Stu-

I am super excited to read SS British Invasion! Thank you so much for all the amazing books you have written. Spy School is my favorite series of yours but funjungle is awesome too. I think I would be perfect for the role of Ben. I do not have acting experience, but I love public speaking and am comfortable in front of a camera. I am 11 so if the movie comes out in 2-3 years I will be the perfect age to play Ben. I am a very fast runner, but not very muscular, can fire a taser (hopefully!) and do a bang up job of fake vomiting (referencing Spy School, Evil Spy School, and Spy Ski School here). For Spy Camp, I love the outdoors. On the economic/financial side of things, I do not care about money. If I were casted it would only be the experience that mattered to me. And probably getting to meet you, that would be pretty awesome. I am super good at math, and am doing algebra at the moment. I am homeschooled, using a curriculum specifically designed for child actors. It is called Oak Meadow, you can look it up. Last but not least, I am 11 and as such would be the perfect age to play Ben if the mobvie were to start casting in 2 or 3 years. Thanks!

  28. Hi Stuart,
I LOVE your books! Are you thinking of casting anytime soon? I would love to audition as Erica!

  29. Mr. Gibbs,

I believe I have the best dream cast ever:
    Ben: Jacob trembay
Erica: Camilla Mendes (she’s too old but still)
    Mike: Colin Ford
    Cyrus: Mel Gibson
    Alexander: Jon Hamm
    Catherine: Emily Blunt
    Principal: Kevin Hart
    Zoe: oona Laurence
    Murray: Dan DiMaggio
    Chip: Froy Gutierrez

That’s who I think will be the best cast! Please let me know what you think!
