20th Century Fox acquires Spy School movie rights

So…

When I posted a little while ago that I had some big news coming, this was not the big news I was talking about.

But this is still very good news.

For all of you who have been asking about when one of my book series might be turned into a movie, the first step has taken place.

20th Century Fox, which has done the film versions of books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Night at the Museum and Percy Jackson, has acquired the rights to make Spy School.

Here are some things to know:

  1. I am going to write the screenplay.
  2. The fact that there is a movie deal is by no means any guarantee that there will actually be a movie.
  3. If there is a movie, it could be a long time until that happens.
  4. We might not be casting for years.  So please don’t write asking if you can be in the movie.

You can learn more about the deal here.

PS that other news — about the new series — is still coming.

  1. Dear Stuart Gibbs,
since you will be writing the screen play will the movie be based off one of the books or will it be like its own mission?

  2. Hey Stuart,
My teacher just assigned an Author Study project to do about our favorite author. Guess who I picked? That’s right! YOU! I don’t think I could live without SS, MBA, or FJ!

  3. Stu-

I can’t wait to meet you at my school and get books signed by you in a few days!

I also can’t wait to get “lion down” in February!

  4. I’m super happy for the movie, but also sad, because whoever plays certain charecters may not look what I think the charecters look like in the book. I feel like it could ruin the effect. Anyway, very exicted for SS7!

  5. Hi Stuart Gibbs!
I’m a really big fan of yours and have read all your books a bazillion times! About the spy school movie… How would I know if the casting is out? Thanks so much and I’m really excited for the new series!!!

  6. Ada –

Ideally, we will cast the best actors possible. I don’t really describe the characters, in part, because of this. But if you have envisioned a character a certain way in your head, be aware that there is almost no way at all that we can cast someone who looks exactly like that.

  7. Leah –

If there is casting news, I will post it on my blog. But it will be at least a year until casting, I’d bet.

  8. Classified –

The movie is only a possibility right now. A lot of things need to fall into place first before the movie can get made, and that’s at least a year away, I’ll bet.

  9. Movies based on books usually change a lot of things. Will this be the case for the Spy School movie? I know it’s probably way to early to give a definitive answer, but I thought I’d ask.

  10. Stu-

I’m very sorry. I didn’t read all of the comments before asking my question, so I didn’t realize you already answered it already. I apologize for the inconvenience. Also, congratulations!

  11. hi stuart do you remember me i wrote to you from Saint James last year you are coming to my school soon see you soon im eating lunch with you soon

  12. Mr. Stuart-

I love your book series right now I have read almost every book and Spy School going south is going to be at my house Friday! I wish I was lucky enough for you to come to my school but, that doesn’t always happen. My favorite book by far is Spy School Secret Service because they end up thinking Ben has switched sides and then later found out they were wrong. You have made so many awesome books I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!!!
    Sincerly,
    CJ H.

  13. Gabriel –

I’m not sure what you mean by the main event.

I have already done a blog post about Lion Down with info about that book.

I recently discovered the spy school books at my library and I love them I have read the first 4 books in the past week, cant wait to go back and get the next one. Keep it up.

  15. stuart-

I’m confused. There’s Spy School, Spy Camp, Evil Spy School, Spy Ski School, Spy School Secret Service and then Spy School South is the seventh. What is the sixth book? Have I missed one?

  16. If spy school does take a few years, then I would be the perfect age for Ben. I am almost ten and in a few years I will be 12. Plus, I REALLY want to play Ben.

  17. I love the spy school books and also the space case and funjungle series. I have read them all TWICE. I think his books are amazing

  18. -Stu
